Wireless router helllpp?

okk.. .i just bought a linksys wireless-G broadband router with speed boost. model number WRT54GS. i am on like the second step. i havve a cable modem but its not connected to the back of the computer... it like goes down in the basement ceiling or somewhere, i dont know cause my dad hooked it up. but you need to connect that to the router.. is there any other way i can do this WITHOUT connecting that??? please help!
